Peter Atkinson - obituary

A great man passed away this week. Peter Atkinson had a distinguished career in port engineering that spanned many decades. His early career was as Chief Engineer of the Taranaki Harbours Board in 1983 and later had roles as Technical Service Manager (Westgate) and Manager of Marine and Port Engineering at Duffill Watts and King. Between 2013-2016 he returned to Port Taranaki as the Port Planning Manager.

Peter was a firm believer in the benefits of applied scientific research, and he backed our original studies into long waves and their effects on moored ships. That led to Port Taranaki having the world’s first long wave forecasting system, developed as a partnership with the newly-formed MetOcean Solutions, back in 2006. This capability has now been deployed in numerous other ports globally and is a key driver for improved safety and efficiency.

We remember Peter with deep respect and gratitude. He was prepared to support innovation and, among other things, gave three scruffy oceanographers the chance to succeed. As a result, a new cohort of scientists has had the opportunity to have career paths in New Zealand, and the port industry is safer. It's inspiring to think that the advocacy and quiet mentorship from one man can catalyse this kind of outcome. Thanks Peter, you had a tangible and positive impact on many.
